Pre-Conference Workshop: Tool Maintenance & Repair

During this workshop, Brick Smith, ASP's Warehouse Coordinator, will share tips and tricks for maintaining and repairing tools. Attendees will get hands-on experience. Learn how to stretch your resources further so that you can repair more homes. Topics covered will include:
  • Tool processing & repair - go through all tools after a busy time, check the cord, blade, guard, oil the tool, etc.
  • Four stroke engine class - review of intake, compression, power, exhaust. You'll practice taking apart and engine and see how this moving parts work. This can help you understand any kind of engine.
  • Troubleshooting generators - "If it doesn't start, don't take it apart." You'll learn what to do instead.
  • Buying replacement parts online - learn where and how to finding parts by using the serial number on the tool.

Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a 53 year old organization that serves a 5 state region and has over 30 full-time staff - and over 1,000 power tools. They are a founding member of the Coalition and are eager to share their best practices with other home repair programs.

This workshop will take place in ASP's warehouse located at 4523 Bristol Highway, Johnson City, TN. This is approximately 23 minutes from the hotel where the conference is being held. We will assist with carpooling the week before the workshop.
